This is Rene’. Today was park day. We walked the boardwalk to Brandywine Falls. We found the Boston Mill Visitor Center was closed. Off to Oak Hill Trail for a scenic 1.8 mile hike that went by Sylvan Pond. Those trees are tall! And the fall colors are peeking. We went down the road to Everett Covered Bridge and then to Kendall Lake.
I’m a day late posting yesterday’s driving events, mostly due to the shock hadn’t worn off until today. Let me explain.
It started out very noneventful. Things are going great. Jeanne Garmin was doing a great job communicating directions, then Rene got bored and was running Google Maps and Waze on her phone. Because it’s important to confuse the directionally challenged one further. Jeanne Garmin took offense to the extra help. She told us we needed to take the exit to the right, then all hell broke loose. You could almost hear JG cackle with delight. Immediately, she told us to take the next exit to the left. Four lanes away and less than 100 feet, traffic zinging along at 65, Rene telling me what the other apps are saying, I’m yelling, ” Dude, muther f**ker”, and at that moment I became Sandra Bullock in Speed driving the bus. I hit the gas turned the truck a hard left and puckered up. Rene was bracing for impact. We made the exit! Wasn’t sure I was breathing. Then I hear Rene say, “What made you decide to do that?” Seriously? I was so happy we lived!
What a day! I’m pretty sure I’ve never been this stretched out of my comfort zone, but here we are! I wore Candy’s Wisconsin shirt, because if you’re going to be directionally challenged, you might as well wear a shirt from someplace you’re not even close too!
I always thought corn and football were the number one things around here. Wrong! It’s road construction and freaking potholes. Ya get up to speed only to pedal down for miles of construction. The potholes bounce you around like a toddler in a jump house. One right after another. We remind each other to be careful opening cupboards so we don’t get smacked by a can of Spam.
Blinkers. No one uses or wants to use them. When someone wants to pass you, they drive up through your trunk, into your backseat, tap you on the shoulder, and whisper, “Tighten your sphincter because I’m going to pass you and cut right in front of you.”
Looking forward to a shorter drive day tomorrow. Going to one of Candy’s favorite stops in the morning. Rise and Roll Bakery.
Another 400 plus mile day in the books. Beautiful drive with rolling corn fields, grain silos and giant wind turbines. And a butt ton of racoon road kill. Never seen anything like it. Every twenty feet was a dead racoon on the side of the road. One would think the rest of the racoon community would look left and quickly realize they can’t make it. But no. Carnage for miles.
Tomorrow we arrive in Indiana were we will say put for two nights. We are looking forward to some much needed exploring on foot.
“I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.”
We made it this far. Between road construction and my peanut bladder, we still made it to our RV site by 6 pm. It was strange going from seeing mountains everywhere to flat and corn fields. It was pretty much a straight shot so I couldn’t screw up directions too bad. We did at one point name a fly that got stuck in the cab. Betty finally got sucked out the window. The Garmin also has a full name. Jeanie Garmin. It sounds so much better when I yell, ” Fu#k you Jeanie Garmin!” IAnyway, tomorrow we are bound for Iowa. Missing Candy but I know she is highly entertained so far.
We made it safely to Wyoming on the first of many legs. It went pretty smooth until we switched drivers and I became the direction giver and reader of the Garmin. I can do hard things…but not that! I suck at both. We missed an exit that was very important to keeping us moving. A gas station. We were down to a twenty mile range. Oh, forgot to mention this was in Utah. We ended up someplace, had to pay a toll, but found a station.
The KOA in Rock Springs was good. Lots of gravel, rocks and road noise. On our evening walk, we were looking at all the different trailers, RVs and motorhomes, and one caught my attention. It was a Phoenix Cruiser. Candy had a Phoenix Cruiser. You don’t see many because they only make so many a year. The tears started to flow. I took it as a sign she was right there with us.
8pm and we are loading a few more things in the trailer. Can’t believe this trip is finally here! Bittersweet for sure. Candy would have loved all the planning we have done, and I’m sure, told us we were going about it all wrong! I’ve packed a few things of hers. A hat, some of her shirts, maps and memories. Stay tuned.
